Władysław Brzosko

PARIS DRAWINGS & EARLY WORKS

Władysław Brzosko arrived in Paris in 1956. He shared his studio space with other Polish artists until his departure for the United States in 1960. His work from this period consists largely of small drawings of Paris café scenes, parks and suburban landscapes, as well as portraits executed predominantly in pen, ink, and watercolor.

While in Paris, Brzosko also began to work on sketches for his extensive composition commemorating the Warsaw ghetto uprising of 1943. These drawings are generally small and stylistically quite different from his finished "Warsaw Ghetto Series" canvases and preparatory sketches. Only a small number of Brzosko's pre-Paris works have survived. They consists mostly of marine landscapes from the Polish coast around the Sopot area. Most of his early work either perished during World War II or was left behind in haste, when he left Poland in 1956.
